DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd is a subsidiary of Digi Swisscom Bhd, formerly known as Mutiara Swisscom Bhd. Its first services were launched on 24th of May 1995 under the brand name of DiGi 1800.

DiGi became the first in the market to introduce a fully digital cellular network (PCN - 016). The GSM 1800 system or better known as the PCN, offers twice the capacity compared to the older GSM 900 systems. GSM 1800 provides bigger capacity of bandwidth, and thus can cater to more subscribers with less congestion

But being the first does not necessarily mean that they can secure more subscribers. In fact, DiGi's business only started rolling in when it launched the first prepaid service on Jan 1998, which became highly popular at the time.

Making itself a niche player, DiGi has capitalized on the low-usage prepaid market. As a matter of fact, the primary driver that made DiGi the third largest cellular player after Celcom and Maxis is the prepaid service.

Although many telco tried to introduce competing packages, DiGi still manage to grab more than 60 % of the prepaid market. At mid 1999, its prepaid subscriber base was estimated at 380,000. After suffering losses for four consecutive years, DiGi made its maiden profit in the financial year 2000, with a net profit of RM23.2m.

DiGi's paid-up capital is RM 500 million and it has a shareholders' fund of RM 799.2 million. Among the major shareholders are Telenor International AS (32.9%), Berjaya VTCY Sdn Bhd (17.63%), and the head of the Berjaya Group, Tan Sri Vincent Tan (10.64%)

As the pioneer of the digital standard in the mobile communications, DiGi definitely realizes that the prepaid market isn't the best way to keep the company running. Instead, it tries to utilize the technology advancement in the mobile industry to compete more effectively and boost up its post paid targets by introducing attractive call plans. One of such effort is the introduction of DiGi's Mobile One package and Djuice, its WAP service.
