Telekom Profile
http://www.tmtouch.com.my
With almost 96.7% of the local fixed line market, Telekom Malaysia Bhd is the telco with the longest history locally. Realizing the unlimited opportunity in the wireless technology, Telekom acquired TMTouch (formerly known as Emartel) from Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd (MRCB) for RM 640 million in August 1996 in a bid to enter the mainstream cellular market.

Besides TMTouch, Telekom also operates 2 more networks in the mobile sector: the automatic telephone using radio ATUR 450 (Nordic Mobile Telephone - 011) launched in January 1995, and Mobifon launched in June 1994, which uses the Advanced Mobile Phone System (AMPS) or Digital Advanced Mobilephone System (DAMPS) network.

At January 2000, TMTouch has more than 205,000 subscribers, followed by Mobikom with 130,000 subscribers and 60,000 users using ATUR. In fact, TMTouch is the first telco to reduce its access fee to RM30 in a price war to win over subscription rates.

Paid up capital for Telekom is RM3 billion and shareholders' fund stood at RM12.03 billion for FY ended Dec 31, 1998. Among the major share holders of Telekom are Khazanah Nasional Bhd (38.88%), Ministry of Finance (Incorporated) (21.7%), Employees Provident Fund (9%) and Bank Negara Malaysia (6.2%).

Maybe Telekom has monopoly the local fixed line market, but in order to succeed in the local wireless telecommunication arena, TMTouch still have a lot of catching up to do
